Facing Africa Noma

Hello! My name’s Mike, I’m 26 years old and live and work in London. I worked as a volunteer in Ethiopian hospitals some years ago and have maintained contacts in that country, particularly in the healthcare sector.

Photo on 2012-11-04 at 16.25 #3This made me aware of realities of people’s lives being destroyed by preventable disease due to poverty. I’m fortunate to have this opportunity to help on behalf of Facing Africa and would be extremely grateful if you could also give your support in offering damaged children the chance of a better life.

As this website more fully explains, Noma is an underreported but horrendous condition that kills 90% of its victims, most of whom are children living in underdeveloped areas of the poorest countries in the world. Those who survive are left with appalling disfigurements that often prevent the victim from speaking or eating normally and can lead to social exclusion. Facing Africa works with these children, assembling teams of medical professionals to carry out facial reconstructive surgery. These transformative operations would never be an option for these children without the support of potential donors such as yourself. Should you want to, you can donate using the links on the left hand side of the page. Should you want to sponsor me and receive further details or race updates just drop me an email at mcummingbruce@live.co.uk and I would be more than happy to offer what further information I can.

About myself, I am a keen runner. I am also a keen eater and drinker and (until recently) an avid smoker of cigarettes. I mention this lest you’re thinking that a gentle 250 kilometers jog in the Sahara carrying equipment sounds anything like me getting your funding to do something I’d probably have done anyway. You can rest assured that you will get some real suffering for your sponsorship, as well as doing your bit contributing to a great cause. I have been getting fitter; recently completing a marathon and muttering plenty of rude words at the increasingly chilly mornings during the jogged commute from Clapham to Canary Wharf. When I’m not doing that I like to watch television, read books, meet friends, go for walks with dogs and other such. I also enjoy climbing. Many thanks for taking the time to visit my profile. Any donation (using this website) or request for information (using my email above), and however big or small, is gratefully received.
