The Marathon Des Sables

How to apply for a place through Facing Africa

Could you compete in these conditions?
Expand Image  Could you compete in these conditions?

Although Facing Africa has a generous number of places allocated each year, we assign each one on an individual basis to men and women who are motivated to take part in the MdS and at the same time raise money for our charity. As the main country representatives are often oversubscribed at least 12 months ahead of each event, we get many applications and need to be certain that each place we allocate is genuine and sincere in its fund raising potential.

Registration fee (including team membership) £3,250

The registration fee covers the following:-

  • Registration with AOI - the organisers
  • Return flights from London to Morocco
  • Transfer on arrival and departure to the Berbere Palace Hotel, Ouarzazate
  • 1st and last 2 nights accommodation at the 5-star Berbere Palace Hotel
  • Insurance for repatriation - arranged by AOI
  • Full medical backup throughout the event
  • Full support with water and tents throughout the event (for further information, please refer to the AOI web site)
  • Facing Africa entry premium - refundable - see below

Not included:-

  • Travel and cancellation insurance
  • Transport to and from airport in the UK
  • Meals during the event (self-sufficiency)
  • All equipment needed to enter the MdS (shoes, rucksack etc)
  • Medical examination and ECG required for entry
  • Extras at the hotel in Ouarzazate (drinks, laundry, phone etc)
  • Security deposit of €200 (refundable), payable to AOI

Payments

  1. In order to secure one of the Facing Africa places, we require a non-refundable deposit of £500 payable to "Facing Africa - NOMA Ltd"
  2. A further instalment of £ 1,000 due not later than 10th Sept 2011
  3. 3rd and final instalment of £ 1,750 due not later than 10th Jan 2012

Premium payable at the time of registration - compulsory

In order for Facing Africa to ensure that all its team members will make every effort to raise money for the charity, we require a refundable premium of £ 1,000, payable to Facing Africa - NOMA Ltd at the time of registering.

Those that are offered a place in the Facing Africa team are required to aim for a minimum target of £ 5,000 in donation made by friends, colleagues, family, corporate sponsors etc. Sponsors and donors should be encouraged to make online, cheques (payable to Facing Africa) or bank transfers to the Facing Africa bank account and wherever applicable indicate whether Facing Africa can claim the gift aid at no extra cost to the donor.

Premium refund

The £ 1,000 premium becomes refundable to the competitor once he/she has generated at least £ 5,000 in donations - excluding gift aid.

It is of course hoped that Facing Africa team members will not merely aim to raise £ 5,000 and stop fund raising. As you will see from our fundraisers page many MdS competitors raise £10, 000, £ 20,000 and even £ 30,000.

What you need to do next:-

If you have clearly understood and accept the above condition, please e-mail the following as soon as possible:

  1. Personal profile - brief details about yourself
  2. Fund raising proposal - details of how you intend realistically to raise £ 5,000 or more for Facing Africa
  3. Full contact details - phone, mobile and postal address

Once we have received the above, we will contact you within 72 hours with a definitive decision on your application for a place in the Facing Africa team 2012 or 2013

Your financial security

Your entry in the MdS will be operated by a specialist tour operator. I was the founder and MD of Best of Morocco from 1971 - 2005 (34 years). My son Max Lawrence opened an office for Best of Morocco in 1993 and lived in Marrakech for 12 years . Max now lives in London and has just started a new Tour operating company called "Lawrence of Morocco Ltd" . The name "Lawrence" in Morocco carries considerable respect and an enviable reputation in most areas of tourism in Morocco.

Lawrence of Morocco Ltd is a fully bonded Tour Operator registered with the Civil Aviation Authority and has its own ATOL Licence No 10388

This means that your money is completely protected.
